If you’ve noticed your balance isn’t what it used to be, you’re not alone. One of the first pieces of advice people often hear is, “Walk more.”
And while I absolutely encourage walking, I don’t think it’s the best place to start if your primary goal is improving balance.
In fact, if I had to choose one piece of equipment for helping many adults over 60 improve their balance, coordination, and confidence, I’d probably choose an exercise ball.
That may sound surprising, but once you understand how balance actually works, it makes perfect sense.
Balance Begins in the Brain, Not the Muscles
Most people think balance comes from having stronger legs.
Strength certainly plays a role, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle.
Your muscles simply carry out instructions. Your nervous system is the one giving the orders.
Every second you’re standing, your brain is processing information from your eyes, your inner ear, your feet, your joints, your muscles, and even your fascia. It takes all of that information and, in fractions of a second, decides which muscles should contract, which should relax, and exactly how much force is needed to keep you upright.
That’s balance.
It’s less about strength than it is about communication.
I often compare it to an orchestra. Your muscles are the instruments, but your nervous system is the conductor. Even the most talented musicians won’t sound good without someone coordinating them.
Walking Is Healthy—But It’s Also Predictable
Walking remains one of the healthiest activities you can do. It improves cardiovascular health, supports joint mobility, boosts mood, and helps maintain overall fitness.
Please keep walking.
The challenge is that walking eventually becomes highly predictable.
Your body moves forward one step at a time, over and over again. Before long, your brain can perform much of the movement almost automatically.
An exercise ball is completely different.
Every second you’re on the ball, your body is making hundreds of tiny adjustments. The surface is constantly changing, forcing your brain to solve new movement challenges in real time.
No two moments are exactly alike.
That constant variability is one of the reasons exercise ball training can be so powerful for improving balance.
Your Nervous System Thrives on New Challenges
One of the concepts I learned through the CHEK Institute is that the nervous system should often be challenged before the muscles.
There’s a good reason for that.
Balance, coordination, timing, and movement quality all originate in the nervous system. Once your brain becomes fatigued, those qualities begin to decline long before your muscles have completely worn out.
That’s why many athletes perform their balance and coordination work early in a workout.
You’re not simply exercising.
You’re teaching your nervous system to become more efficient at organizing movement.
That efficiency often carries over into everyday life.
Sometimes the Brain Forgets How to Move
Another concept that has dramatically influenced the way I work with clients is something called sensory-motor amnesia.
The name sounds complicated, but the idea is actually straightforward.
After pain, surgery, or long periods of inactivity, the brain can lose its ability to effectively recruit certain muscles. The muscles aren’t necessarily weak. They’re simply no longer communicating well with the nervous system.
Imagine trying to have a conversation over a phone with a poor signal. The message is there, but it never arrives clearly.
An exercise ball creates an environment where your brain is constantly searching for better solutions. Those small stabilizing muscles that may have been ignored for years suddenly become important again.
Over time, the communication between your brain and body can improve.
Training the Reflexes That Prevent Falls
One of the things I appreciate most about exercise ball training is that it develops the automatic reflexes that help prevent falls.
Your righting reflexes help restore your posture when you begin to lose your balance while the ground beneath you remains stable. Think about stepping off a curb unexpectedly or catching yourself after a small stumble.
Your equilibrium, or tilting, reflexes become important when the surface beneath you is moving or unstable. Standing on a bus as it pulls away, walking on ice, or navigating uneven terrain all require these reflexes to react quickly.
An exercise ball challenges both systems simultaneously.
Every movement asks your nervous system to recognize a change, organize a response, and regain stability.
Those repeated experiences help your body become more prepared for the unexpected challenges of everyday life.
Sharpening Your Body’s Internal GPS
Another important component of balance is proprioception.
I like to describe proprioception as your body’s internal GPS.
Thousands of specialized receptors throughout your feet, ankles, knees, hips, spine, muscles, and fascia continuously send information to your brain about where your body is in space.
As we age, those signals often become less precise.
The constantly changing surface of an exercise ball forces your brain to continually update its internal map. Every small shift provides fresh sensory information that helps sharpen your awareness of body position and movement.
The result is often smoother, more confident movement.
Better Movement Through Variability
One of the biggest reasons people continue to struggle with pain is that they repeat the same movement patterns day after day.
Unfortunately, the nervous system becomes very good at memorizing compensation patterns.
Instead of teaching one repetitive movement, the exercise ball introduces constant variability.
Every repetition is slightly different.
Your brain has to adapt instead of simply repeating an old solution.
That adaptability is valuable whether you’re recovering from an injury, trying to reduce pain, or simply hoping to move well for decades to come.
Why I Often Begin With Self-Massage
Before many balance sessions, I like to spend a minute or two waking up the sensory system.
A simple self-massage of the feet can stimulate thousands of sensory receptors and improve awareness before stepping onto the exercise ball.
Think of it like turning on the lights before beginning a project.
The better your nervous system can “see,” the better it can organize movement.
It’s a small step that often makes the balance exercises that follow much more effective.
The Goal Isn’t to Master the Exercise Ball
Walking remains one of the best things you can do for your health.
Keep walking.
But if your goal is improving balance, don’t stop there.
Your nervous system doesn’t improve by repeating the same movement over and over. It improves by solving new movement problems, adapting to changing conditions, and learning to respond automatically when life becomes unpredictable.
That’s exactly what an exercise ball provides.
The goal isn’t to become exceptionally good at sitting on an exercise ball.
The goal is to build a nervous system that automatically keeps you upright when you step off a curb, slip on a wet floor, walk across uneven ground, or simply move through life with greater confidence.
Because as we age, better balance isn’t just about preventing falls.
It’s about maintaining the freedom to keep doing the things you love.
