ELDOA vs. Pravilo Stretching. 5 Arguments for ELDOA.

If you have spent any time looking into advanced stretching, mobility, or fascial training, you may have come across something called Pravilo stretching. It is certainly interesting. Pravilo uses a large frame and a system of ropes to place the body under tension while stretching the arms and legs away from the center of the body. The goal is much bigger than simply becoming more flexible.

In fact, there are several things about Pravilo that I like.

Pravilo USA describes the method as a combination of dynamic stretching, tension-based resistance, and targeted muscular engagement. The system is intended to work with the joints, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissues while developing strength and mobility.

If you have followed my work for very long, you probably recognize why that interests me. I don’t believe stretching should simply be about pulling on a tight muscle until it becomes more flexible. The body is an interconnected system, and muscles, fascia, joints, ligaments, the nervous system, and the forces traveling through them all influence how we move.

But if you asked me to choose between Pravilo and ELDOA, I would choose ELDOA.

Here are five reasons why.

1. ELDOA Allows Us to Be Much More Specific

The biggest difference between ELDOA and Pravilo may be specificity.

Pravilo creates tension throughout the body. That global approach is part of what makes the system interesting. But sometimes global tension isn’t what I’m looking for.

Sometimes I want to influence a very specific articulation.

That is where ELDOA becomes different.

ELDOA was developed by French osteopath Guy VOYER, DO, and individual ELDOA postures are designed around the biomechanics of specific joints. The official ELDOA curriculum, for example, progresses from individual spinal segments to specific peripheral articulations including the coxofemoral joint, shoulder complex, ribs, and sternum.

Think about the difference between turning on every sprinkler in your yard and taking a hose directly to one plant. Both involve water, but one allows you to be much more specific about where that water goes. ELDOA gives me that specificity.

If I am concerned with the relationship between L5 and S1, I can select an ELDOA specifically for L5-S1. If I am working with the hip, there are ELDOA postures designed around the coxofemoral joint.

The goal isn’t simply to “stretch the back” or “stretch the hip.”

We are organizing the body to create a very specific mechanical objective.

2. ELDOA Isn’t Really Stretching in the Traditional Sense

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about ELDOA.

People see an ELDOA posture and assume they are looking at an advanced stretch.

But there is much more happening.

An ELDOA uses myofascial tension, muscular contraction, precise positioning, and biomechanics to create what is called decoaptation at a specific articulation. The primary objective described by the ELDOA system is to create space at the targeted joint.

That distinction matters.

Imagine two vertebrae with an intervertebral disc between them. Instead of simply trying to stretch everything surrounding those vertebrae, ELDOA attempts to organize forces throughout the body to influence the relationship between those specific structures.

This requires what we call fixed points and mobile points.

One part of the body has to become incredibly stable while another part creates tension away from it. At the same time, other areas of the body must be positioned correctly so that the forces don’t simply escape somewhere else.

That’s why an ELDOA can look relatively simple and still be incredibly difficult when performed correctly.

You aren’t just holding a stretch.

You are actively creating tension throughout an interconnected system.

3. ELDOA Forces You to Participate in the Process

One of my favorite things about ELDOA is that you cannot be completely passive.

You have to work.

During an ELDOA, you may be actively pushing through your heels, reaching through your hands, positioning your pelvis, controlling your spine, maintaining tension through the fascia, and breathing—all at the same time.

That changes the exercise considerably.

You aren’t simply trying to make tissue longer. Your nervous system has to figure out where your body is in space and maintain that organization under tension.

The official ELDOA system actually identifies improving spinal kinesthetics and the mind-body connection among its intended benefits.

This fits extremely well with how I think about movement.

Your brain doesn’t operate individual muscles in isolation. It has to coordinate an entire movement system.

The more precisely you can control that system, the more options you potentially have for movement.

This is also why I frequently tell people that ELDOA can become a form of movement education.

You’re learning about your own body while you’re doing it.

4. ELDOA Gives Us More Control Over Where the Tension Goes

Creating more tension isn’t necessarily better.

Creating the right tension is what matters.

This is an important distinction because the body will almost always find the easiest way to accomplish whatever task you give it.

If one area doesn’t move particularly well, another area may move more.

If one structure isn’t creating enough stability, another structure may compensate.

This is why simply pulling harder on the body doesn’t necessarily solve a movement problem.

ELDOA requires precision.

Small changes in the pelvis, foot, shoulder, hand, or spine can completely change how an ELDOA feels because those changes alter how tension travels through the system.

This is one of the concepts that originally attracted me to the work of Guy Voyer.

The body behaves less like a collection of individual muscles and more like an interconnected network of tension.

Pull on one part of the system and forces can be transmitted somewhere else.

ELDOA gives us a framework for manipulating that tension with a specific anatomical objective.

That doesn’t make Pravilo ineffective. It simply makes ELDOA better suited to the way I personally approach movement.

5. ELDOA Can Become Something You Own

This may be the most practical advantage of all.

Pravilo requires equipment.

A traditional Pravilo setup uses a large frame with ropes and attachment points for the extremities. Pravilo USA currently sells a collapsible frame measuring roughly 11 feet long by 8 feet wide, and the frame itself is listed at $4,850.

ELDOA requires almost nothing.

Give me a floor and enough room for you to move your arms and legs, and we can probably perform an ELDOA.

Many ELDOA postures are held for approximately one minute.

That makes them incredibly useful as a self-care tool.

I can teach someone an ELDOA in the studio and, once they understand how to perform it correctly, they can practice it at home, at the gym, in a hotel room, or almost anywhere else.

That matters because I don’t want people completely dependent on me.

My goal is to help people better understand their bodies and give them tools they can use themselves.

If you can spend a few minutes each day working on a specific area rather than waiting until your next appointment to have someone do something to you, you become an active participant in your own movement and health.

To me, that is extremely valuable.

Does That Mean Pravilo Stretching Is Bad?

Not at all.

In fact, I think Pravilo is fascinating.

The system’s emphasis on connective tissue, tension, muscular engagement, mobility, and whole-body integration shares some philosophical similarities with how I approach movement. Pravilo USA also teaches the method as more than passive stretching, incorporating resistance, breathing, strength, and movement into its training.

But the two systems aren’t identical, and I don’t think we should pretend they are.

Pravilo gives us an interesting way to place the entire body under tension.

ELDOA gives me a way to organize whole-body tension around a very specific anatomical objective.

For the type of work I do, that distinction is important.

The Real Question Isn’t Which Stretch Is Better

There is another point worth making.

There currently isn’t strong comparative scientific research showing that ELDOA is superior to Pravilo or that Pravilo is superior to ELDOA.

So I wouldn’t tell someone that science has proven ELDOA is the better system.

It hasn’t.

My preference comes from something different: anatomy, biomechanics, more than two decades of working with movement, and my experience studying and applying ELDOA.

And I think that distinction is important.

We shouldn’t be searching for the “best stretch.”

We should be asking a much better question:

What exactly are we trying to accomplish?

If your only objective is becoming more flexible, there are hundreds of ways to stretch.

But if I want to create a very specific mechanical environment around a particular articulation while simultaneously developing active tension, body awareness, and control, ELDOA gives me an extremely interesting tool for doing that.

That’s ultimately why I prefer it.

Not because Pravilo is bad.

Not because ELDOA is magic.

But because specificity matters.

And when I’m working with the human body, I want as much specificity as I can get.
